Crafting Your Core Content - The Foundation of Your Resume

Your core content is the backbone of your resume, providing a snapshot of who you are professionally. Here are the essential elements to include -

  • Contact Information - Make it easy for employers to reach out! Include your professional email address and phone number (optional). Ensure your email address sounds professional (e.g., [email address removed]) and avoid using nicknames or personal email addresses.

  • Compelling Summary or Objective Statement - This is a 2-3 sentence introduction summarizing your skills and career aspirations.

Summary Statement (For Experienced Professionals): Highlight your key skills and experiences relevant to the target industry. Briefly mention your career goals and what you bring to the table.

Objective Statement (For First-Time Applicants): Outline your career aspirations and the type of position you seek. Briefly mention relevant skills you possess.

Example: Summary Statement (Marketing Professional)

Enthusiastic marketing professional with 5+ years of experience in social media management and content creation. Proven track record of increasing brand awareness and driving customer engagement. Seeking a challenging position at a growing company to leverage my skills and contribute to strategic marketing initiatives.

Example: Objective Statement (Recent Graduate)

I recently graduated with a degree in graphic design and a passion for visual storytelling. Skilled in Adobe Creative Suite and eager to learn new technologies. Seeking an entry-level position in a creative agency to develop my skills and contribute to a collaborative team environment.

  • Education - List your educational background, including degrees, diplomas, and relevant coursework. If you have academic achievements (e.g., Dean's List, scholarships), include them here.

This is how ATS scans your resume keywords

The Art of the Spotlight

Imagine that you are walking into a room with lights flickering around you – you won't know where to look! Just like that, the generic resume makes it hard for recruiters to find those particular skills needed for the job. So your resume must be customized every time you make a new application.

Decode the Job Description - The job description is your guidebook. It will help you reach success in no time with its valuable tips. Carefully analyse the stated skill and responsibility. These are the key phrases that you want to use in your resume as these will play an instrumental role in leading the readers to your resume.

Targeted Skills & Experiences - Make a note not to simply list everything you’ve ever done. Place special attention on those experiences that match the desired skills. When it comes to quantifying achievements, always try to include as much specific data as possible. For example, instead of saying "increased sales generated," it is simply "increased sales by 15% through established the new marketing campaign".

Instead of using passive verbs such as "the head of" opt for more vibrant and impactful action verbs including "managed," " spearheaded," or "developed." Use of active voice demonstrates your initiative and problem-solving skills.

Example:

  • Generic: Responsibilities included managing social media accounts.
  • Tailored: Managed company social media accounts, resulting in a 20% increase in follower engagement through targeted content creation.

 Beating the Algorithm

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are software programs used by many companies to scan and filter resumes submitted online. These systems can process hundreds, even thousands, of resumes quickly, but that also means they prioritize specific criteria.

  • Remember those keywords you identified in the job description from Subheading 1: Tailoring Your Resume for Each Job? Strategically incorporate them throughout your resume, but be mindful not to overdo it. Aim for natural integration that showcases your skills while staying relevant to the ATS scan. Don't simply sprinkle keywords throughout the text – use them organically within your descriptions of your skills and experiences. • ATS systems prefer simple, text-based formats. Use only a little text, bold headings, or bullet points and make the format of your resume similar throughout. Use simple and professional fonts like Arial or Times New Roman to keep your design consistent, and all fonts of the same size (10-12 points) throughout.

  • Action Verbs are Your Power Words. We addressed this point back in Subheading 2, but it is so significant that it deserves extra attention here as well. Switch the passive verbs, such as "responsible for" with the active ones, eg - "managed" or "developed". Active verbs demonstrate your initiative and effort. Such as, we could phrase the sentence as "used social media platforms to enhance brand awareness by 20% through designing strategic content."

  • You should try to give specific details by quantifying your achievements by number and percentage. This demonstrates the impact you've made in previous roles and grabs the attention of the ATS scanner.

Don't just use the generic "resume.doc" filename. Instead, create a file name that includes your full name and the specific job you're applying for (e.g., JohnSmith_MarketingManager.doc). This helps recruiters easily identify your application and ensures your resume gets associated with the correct position.

Benefits of Using Resume Scanner For Jobs

For most of the freshmen, the job search process seems unclear and, for many, is quite challenging. It is here where the online resume scanners step in as your virtual AI assistants. These efficient and straightforward tools, like the resume analyzer and the job-hunting assistant, enable you to take corrective actions to ensure your resume looks the best it can be.

  • The resume scanner software can pinpoint weaknesses, for example, the absence of vital keywords or formatting issues. Moreover, it provides recommendations as well. Additionally, they can guide you in terms of skills that you need to consider for your career plan and the trending job market.

  • Some scanners perform checks for compatibility, making sure your resume is laid out in a way that ATS can pick up. This can, in addition, increase a lot your chance of reaching the following step of screening and being looked up by a human recruiter.

  • Today, you can find a variety of online resume scanners which are free at no cost. Utilizing these tools empowers you to take control of your job search and build a confident resume that gets noticed.
